Paraburdoo Youth Centre

The facilities at the Paraburdoo Youth Centre (PYC) are comfortable and youth appropriate which in turn assists in maintaining a healthy level of social interaction for users.  The activity options are varied and target small group interaction where life skills can be developed effectively.

The PYC is one of the only regular services offered to local youth and is now an integral part of youth social culture in the town and has provided youth with a structured and supervised place to meet and interact.  It also plays a huge mentoring function in young people’s lives and the ongoing supervision by workers allows for immediate intervention if the need arises.

Although the rec area at PYC is designed on a ‘drop in’ model we try to use these environments to mentor and motivate young people.  We encourage young people to take some ownership over their centre and use this arena as a springboard to encourage their participation in our more structured activities and programs.

The Drop In areas provide access to an:

  • Indoor recreation – Pool, music, computer & internet access, TV, DVD, Wii, Playstation, Xbox, games and chill out area, table tennis, art and crafts. The recreation area is also used for more structured activities including discos, movie nights etc.
  • Outdoor recreation – 3 on 3 basketball, access to full basketball courts, cricket courts, and seating facilities, BBQ’s

We offer a number of Life Skills training courses and access to programs which encourage participation and self generated involvement.  These include:

  • Peer Support Program (PSP)
  • Girls in Tune (GIT)
  • Leadership Training
  • Alcohol & Drugs – Harm Minimisation
  • Boxing Program
  • Regular Basketball Competitions

Intensive Support

The drop in service delivered from Paraburdoo is underpinned by a strong focus on referral, especially into the more intensive support services based at the Tom Price Youth Centre.  Young people are provided with access to extended support via a regular visiting outreach service which provides youth with access to all of the intensive support services outlined on the Tom Price Youth Centre page and include justice, income support, counselling, advocacy, mediation and further referral.

Resource Area

We have a comprehensive resource area which provides young people with relevant information on many issues.  We try to access resources which are youth culture friendly.

Local Drug Action Groups

The Paraburdoo Youth Centre is also a youth based Local Drug Action Group.  Members of LDAG are proactive in developing events and activities that are drug and alcohol free, and which provide alternatives for young people. These events include discos, community cinema, live music performance and youth talent shows.  On many occasions the youth from LDAG will also assist other community groups with their events
